Despite being born in Portland she spent the first five to six years of her life in a tiny town known as Boring in which her family had a bee farm although her mother was averse to bees and she grew up surrounded by farm animals as well as the farmland. Their parents divorced and moved to Montana, then Seattle where she saw her mother change jobs frequently. They did not run the farm for long.
